National Prawn Company

Covering an area of approximately 250sq km on the Red Sea Coast in Saudi Arabia the privately owned, NPC is among the largest, fully integrated prawn farms in the world. The ten farms are fed directly from the pristine, crystal clear waters of the Red Sea. Sustainability is an integral part of NPC’s commitment to its customers, employees and shareholders. Every aspect of production from hatchery to pond to plate is monitored and traceable
Located 150kms south of the Kingdom’s commercial centre, Jeddah, and close to the ancient port town of Al Lith, NPC’s 2,400 employees help to produce over 15,000 tonnes a year of white prawn (Fenneropenaeus indicus) for sale in the Kingdom and around the world.
The first phase of development is complete with ten farms, each comprising up to 28 ponds with each pond measuring roughly ten hectares. Phase II of development is under construction with a further 13 farms of the same size planned. The first two farms in Phase II will come into production in 2010. Other aspects of Phase II include aeration of all ponds, on land production of fish (Greater Amberjack) and Sea Cucumber (or Sand Fish)
Every aspect of NPC’s production is based on sustainability from pond to plate. No antibiotics are used at any stage of production. NPC has a policy of low-density stocking and partial harvests to prevent overcrowding. An extensive bio-security programme is maintained at all times with daily sampling of various elements from NPC’s scientists in the Quality & Sustainability Department. NPC is certified for ISO 14001 and is actively seeking other accreditations.
NPC produces shrimp to a variety of sizes as required by our customers around the world and is renowned for its superior taste and quality by internationally acclaimed chefs and satisfied consumers alike including those in Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea, USA, China and Australia.
NPC began with a small research project in 1982 and with commitment, dedication and a blend of science and art, is proud to have developed such a significant business, which it hopes will contribute to the wider diversification of the Saudi economy through the growth of the aquaculture industry in the Kingdom. More than that, NPC is committed to maintaining and developing its operations to the general benefit of Saudi society economically, socially and environmentally.

National Prawn Company follows the codes of conduct and methods of production outlined under the United Nation's definition of "Sustainable Development". It produces antibiotic-free shrimp with no hormones and no preservatives using eco-friendly, sustainable shrimp farming methods. It uses low stocking densities and settling ponds to protect the local aquatic ecosystem.

Work Force: More than 2,400 employees from 26 countries.

Broodstock: Brood stock (specific pathogen free) is collected from brood stock ponds where they are maintained under special conditions . At present, NPC is using P.indicus G-27 of its the domesticated white shrimp.

Nauplii Production:These production facilities consist of two units, each with three wings with attached reservoirs and independent water treatment systems. Each wing consists of maturation section, spawning section and hatching section. Each wing can produce up to 10 million quality Nauplii a day.

Postlarvae Production: These production facilities consist of three units, each with three wings with attached reservoirs and water treatment systems. Each wing consists of larval section, algal section, artemia section and post larval section. Each wing can produce up to 7.5 million quality SPF/SPR post larvae a cycle.

Processing Plant: NPC has invested considerably in a highly modern, technologically advanced processing plant at its Al Lith site using equipment from leading seafood technology companies. The plant is capable of processing eighty tonnes a day of head-on shrimps.
The plant is designed to process a wide variety of products from simple block frozen products to high value, ready-to-eat Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) cooked products. Since the processing plant is located within the project site the freshness of the product is maintained until it reaches the customer. Great focus is given to implementing HACCP and ISO quality control systems to deliver safe products to our customers.

Feed Mill: "Safe Food from Safe Feed" is the guiding principle of the Feed Mill, which focuses on producing quality products based on the latest feed technology and R&D information.
The feedmill was constructed in 2001 and is a fully automated plant, controlled completely by computer. NPC produces feed in crumble pellets, which can remain for a sustained period of time in the water.
In January 2008, HRH Prince Khalid Al.Faisal laid the foundation stone of the feed mill expansion project, which included warehouses and silos for raw materials and products. This expansion meets the future needs of NPC and will allow capacity for international sales.

NPC has developed a special feed formula suited to its stock, which enjoy a high saline environment. The plant has accreditation for international quality certificates such as ISO 9001-2000, SQF, HACCP and ISO 2004:14001.

Intake Pumping Station: The intake pump station is designed to accommodate a flow of 70 m3 a sec at the static head of 2.5 meters above sea level. The station is equipped with twelve (12) Amacan submersible, vertical pumps. The intakes are have screens to avoid the inflow of contaminants and other unwanted materials. The total length of the manmade intake canal is 35 km.

Drain Pumping Station: The return water pump station is designed to push water at a rate of 70 m3 a sec. at the static head of 1.1 meters above sea level. The station is equipped with seventeen (17) Amaline submersible, horizontal pumps. The latter are of mixer type, which minimize energy consumption. The suction sides have screens to avoid the inflow of contaminants and other unwanted materials. The discharge column of 1800 mm has flap valves to protect the backflow of sea water. The total length of the manmade return water canal is 38.2 km.

Chitin Production: A chitin plant has been designed to process online, fresh shrimp head waste materials for the production of chitin. The plant has a current capacity of 600 kg an hour producing high quality dried shrimp head powder. This is then processed into high-grade chitin and, by a further refinement, into glucosamine. Production at current capacity is 3,000 tonnes a year with sales expected in local and international markets to customers in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and food additives industries.

Miles of Roads on the Farm: NPC has built extensive asphalted and non-asphalted roads throughout the site. The roads are equivalent to 157km of which 57km are asphalted.
