The objective is to realize the department of Marine Agriculture, which Implements the following capabilities:
  • industrial production of marine phytoplankton,
  • industrial production of bioreactors, based on a NPC owned patent,
  • development, marketing and sales of products made from phytoplankton directly (fresh, dried, processed or extracted),
  • or products such as biopolymers from invertebrate organisms that can be grown on phytoplankton,
  • generating products for various markets: feed, food, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, fine chemicals, polymers, bio energy, carbon dioxide trade;
And is characterized by
  • using pure phytoplankton species, preferentially locally isolated species, otherwise non-invasive and non-toxic species
  • exclusive use of salt water,
  • a sustainable (i.e. recycling) technology,
  • development of derived technologies to support and/or improve NPC-specific core operations;
  • a modular technology, with a characteristic fast up- and down-scalability
  • a scale of operation with relevance for global carbon fixation;
Using education to help secure future human resources for NPC
  • by developing scholar curricula or informative documents,
  • by offering career promoting courses, such as biotechnology or project management,
  • by actively seeking cooperation with Saudi Arabian universities and scouting of talents world wide;
Leading to
  • a long lasting successful and globally leading position in marine agriculture in general, and in the production of marine phytoplankton in particular,
  • a change in paradigm of global resource availability for feed, food and organic chemicals, including bio-fuels.

The central business activity of Marine Agriculture is based on the production of marine phytoplankton on land in a controlled environment, as a new global resource for existing and novel products. Marketing & sales , Ecological technologies and (classical) marine biotechnology complement the core activities of Marine Agriculture.

Downstream processing (leading to more products diversification and added value), Knowledge management (to stay on the frontier of new developments), Education (to secure a highly professional and motivated team of employees) and applied R&D (to improve the technology, to develop new patents) are integral activities needed to support the core activities.

The diverse product portfolio, both in terms of price and quality, provides NPC with a unique marketing position in the health food (nutraceuticals) markets. A single producer can supply many different specialized products ('one shop, one stop'), which is unique in the health food market.

Two activities will enjoy highest priority: the realization of a small phytoplankton production unit and the biotechnological production of polymers from residual material from shrimp heads (chitosan, glucosamin, and three more secondary products).
